Deborah Leaving for Ft. Jackson in 22 days!

I just lost the post I was writing, so this one is going to be considerably shorter! Finally, I am shipping for BCT in 22 days! I did not have time to prepare as well as I would have wanted, especially physically, but if it wasn't for the small amount of time I did have with Sgt. Volkin's The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook and Workbook, I'd be in an absolute panic. They were well worth it! Continue

Scott Harrison Levy Leaving for BCT at 39 years old

I enlisted in the Army on March 10th of this year. I am finally shipping out (after 6 months of waiting) on Sept. 1st. The anxiety is starting to mount. I have done as much training as I possibly can so, I know that I am mentally prepared. I still worry about my physical shape a little bit. I didn't exactly take care of my body over the past decade and my age certainly doesn't help. I have, however, tried to overcome my poor health habits since enlistment. I have quit smoking, drinking alcohol,… Continue

SGT Volkin Shin Splints

Shin splints are a common cause for concern for each military recruit. Whether you are leaving for Air Force boot camp and just trying to prepare yourself for the Army basic training workout, shin splints can easily occur. And, to make it even worse, there is no magic pill to cure them. Shin splints are a result of fatigue and trama of the muscles near your shins. This trama can feel like someone is hammering at your shins with each step. For military fitness style workouts,… Continue

SGT Volkin Somali Pirate Situation Shows Great Example of Quality US Military Training

Many of you have watched the news this weekend and saw the Somalia pirates story unfold into a happy ending as a result of the Navy Seals. In my book The Ultimate Basic Training Guidebook I quote “Train hard, fit easy and win. Train easy, fit hard and die.” Although this was not my quote and is in fact, centuries old, it rings true this day as it did centuries ago.

When you are in basic training, you have to focus and train hard because everything in basic training has a reason. There is a r

Michelle Coming Home to a Drill SGT

II think this is a funny story and wanted to share. If all goes well at meps shortly, I will be going to BCT. Here is the kicker, while I'm being "improved" by a Drill SGT,my boyfriend will be training to become one! I will be coming home not to have a break from the Campaign Hat, but to see it everyday. Luckily, I could never look at him that way, (I wash the guy's underwear after all!) except to be proud of him. Continue

Karen Stafford my path

Thought I would blog a bit about myself, where I am from, where I am at in life, and where I plan to go with my life and in particular with the military. At least in very short version... I was born and raised in the great state of Alaska. When I was in my senior year in high school (94-95) I planned to join the military following graduation. God it seems had other plans as I found out I was pregnant before I could leave for basic. I am now the blessed mother of three and a very proud Army wife.… Continue
